Coppa Italia Shock: Sampdoria Beats Inter 3-0

March 4, 2009

The shocker in Coppa Italia tonight is the 3-0 butt-whuppin’ Sampdoria just handed the mighty Inter Milan 3-0, with all goals coming in the first half. Samp is on a tear, having just put the wood to AC Milan, and now beating up on the other Milan team. Regardless of who the coach has been the past few years, Inter knows how to win the Scudetto but they always seem to choke in the Coppa.

The question now for Jose Mourinho’s Nerazzurri is whether they can leverage this loss into the motivation they need for their Champion’s League second leg match against Manchester United in Old Trafford.

Other upsets in European cup play tonight was Bayer Leverkusen’s 4-2 win over Bayern Munich, which knocked the Bavarian powerhouse out of the DFB Pokal (German Cup). This loss is sure to put extra pressure on embattled Bayern coach Jurgen Klinsmann, whose team is making a strong showing in the Champion’s League but not in the Bundesliga.

The fifth place Bayern, is only four points shy of league leaders Hertha Berlin and it seems winning some silverware may be necessary for Klinsmann to keep his job.

Champions League Review: Let The Bands Do The Talking

February 26, 2009

Instead of my own commentary on the results of this week’s Champions League matches, I’ll let some fine bands do it instead.

Bayern Munich 5 – Sporting Lisbon 0:

Chelsea 1 – Juventus 0

*Everyone knows the Gallaghers are huge City fans but this one just seemed to fit.

Arsenal 1 – AS Roma 0

Inter Milan 0 – Manchester United 0

Olympique Lyon 1 – Barcelona 1

*Yep Barca, you were Outshined.

Real Madrid 0 – Liverpool 1

Porto 2 – Atletico Madrid 2

Porto had something to prove and their comeback proved it well

Villarreal 1 – Panathanaikos 1

Perfect if you’re Panathanaikos

Last Minute Champions League Predictions

February 24, 2009

If you’re like me and could care less about the Oscars (and are already tired of hearing about it), tonight’s Champion’s League matches are arriving just in time. Here are my predictions:

Arsenal 2 – Roma 1. Roma’s road form is weak in Italy and even worse when they travel to England. But, Roma are on a roll and won’t go down easily.

Inter Milan 2 – Manchester United 1. This game is pretty evenly matched in terms of quality but The Special One has Sir Alex’s number tonight

Atlético 1 – Porto 1. Atlético barely survives a Porto attacking flurry that nearly pulls off an upset.

Lyon 1 – Barcelona 3. Lyon will put up a good fight in the freezing cold Stade Gerland but Barca’s quality will overwhelm the home side starting in the 65th minute.

Sacha Kljestan Closer To A Deal In Europe?

December 21, 2008

Chivas USA’s Sacha Kljestan has been on the radar of more than a few European clubs since his strong showing at last summer’s Olympic Games. A few Dutch and German clubs have reported interest in the young American along with Moncao, Zenith St Petersburg, and Greek side Piraeus.

Word out of LA this weekend is that Kljestan is about to board a plane headed for Milan. What is not clear is whether he is going for talks with a nearby club, catching a connecting flight to Monaco, or playing in a charity match which could raise his profile even higher on this side of the pond.

If we recall the Courtney Rule that for every known European club interested in a player, there is at least one more quietly working a deal in the shadows, don’t be surprised if Kljestan is drawing more attention south of the Alps.
